Dear Alumni member, Prof. Bhaskar Ramamurthi (BTEE-80) our new director of IIT Madras, will be visiting Bay Area chapter along with Prof. Nagarajan (BTCH-81; Advisor- Office of Alumni Affairs) and Prof. David Koilpillai (BTEE-84; Dean-Planning). Prof Bhaskar will be sharing his vision for the institute for the next 5+ years, and will update us on various initiatives taken by the institute and himself to realize the vision. Dr.Bhaskar,a founding member of TeNeT, holds an M.S. (1982) and a Ph.D (1985) degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of California, Santa Barbara, USA. Image Coding using Vector Quantization, an area in which he did some of his early work, formed the subject of his doctoral thesis. Soon after obtaining his doctorate, he joined the AT&T Bell Laboratories, USA, where he worked on problems in indoor wireless communications. In 1986, he joined the faculty at the Department of Electrical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-M), his alma mater. He had earlier graduated from IIT-M in 1980 with a B.Tech in Electronics Engineering. Prof. R. Nagarajan (Advisor, Office of Alumni Affairs) Dr. R. Nagarajan is currently Professor, Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT Madras, India. He also serves as Advisor, Office of Alumni Affairs at IIT Madras. Prior to taking up this academic position in 2004, Dr. Nagarajan was a world-renowned expert in the areas of chemical integration and contamination control during his 15-year tenure with IBM Storage Systems Division (SSD) in San Jose, CA where he was designated as an IBM Technical Resource in 2002, one among very few in North America. He has co-authored a book on “Contamination and ESD Control in High-Technology Manufacturing”, published by J Wiley & Sons in September 2006. Dr. Nagarajan was given the “Outstanding Younger Member Award” by the Institute of Environmental Sciences & Technology, and in 2007, received the Maurice Simpson Technical Editors’ Award from the same Institute for best Journal paper in Contamination Control. He has more than 100 publications, presentations and patents to his credit, accumulated over a 20-year professional career. Dr. Nagarajan obtained his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Yale University in 1986 and a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering in 1981 from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. Prof. David Koilpillai (BTEE-84)
Prof. David Koilpillai is Professor of Electrical Engineering department, and is currently the Dean (Planning) at IIT Madras. He has established an active research and teaching program in wireless communications at IIT Madras. During 2008-09, he served as the Co-Chair of the IITM special Task Force for setting up the new IIT at Hyderabad. He also served as Head, Central Electronics Centre of IITM during 20010-11. David’s technical areas of expertise include cellular and broadband wireless systems, and DSP techniques for wireless communications. During Jan – July 2007, David served as the Chief Scientist, Centre of Excellence in Wireless Technology (CEWiT), a public-private R&D initiative of the Govt. of India. At CEWiT, David was responsible for launching the national project – Broadband Wireless Consortium of India (BWCI), focusing on emerging broadband wireless standards. Prior to joining IITM, David was at Ericsson USA for twelve years. As a Director of the Ericsson’s Advanced Technologies and Research Department at RTP, North Carolina, he was responsible for an R&D team developing GPRS/EDGE handset technology. Honors / Awards - David’s technical contributions at Ericsson and IIT Madras have resulted in 32 US patents (awarded), 1 Indian Patent application, 14 journal papers and over 50 conference publications - 1999 – David received the “Ericsson Inventor of the Year” award, the highest technical recognition within Ericsson - Nov 2003 - David was elected Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering. Prof. David Koilpillai received his MS and PhD degrees in Electrical Engineering from California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, USA, and the B.Tech degree from IIT Madras.
